Hannah, who died suddenly in the summer of 2022 at age 69, moved to New York from the Midwest in the 1970s, to attend Parsons School of Design. He kept journals from these formative years in New York which were eventually published to acclaim by Knopf in 2018 (“20th Century Boy: Notebooks of the Seventies”). Creating a stylistic mix of Ivy League, swinging London, and classic bohemian, his work evolved with contemporaries Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Debbie Harry, Fran Leibovitz and others. Although critics thought Hannah was being ironic when his painting career was launched in the 1980s, his work was “more of a love letter to art history”, often referencing Whistler, Bonnard, Vuillard, Homer, Hopper and Balthus, as well as reflecting his love of foreign cinema.
Born in the United States in 1952 and died in 2022.
